May 10, 2019Mother’s Day is the holiday honoring motherhood and all they do all year round. Everyone has a Mother, and no job is more promising and rewarding than being a Mother. But where did Mother’s Day originate from? Well, there are rumors that back in 1908, Anna Jarvis created the holiday and in 1914 it became an official U.S. holiday.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to Ancient Greek and Romans. They held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. But the clearest modern precedent of Mother’s Day is the early Christian Festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” It was a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe which would fall on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “Mother Church”, which was the main church in the vicinity of their home for a special service.
Over time however the Mothering Sunday tradition would shift into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity and would merge with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

- Carnations have a special meaning on Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Jarvis used the carnation on Mother’s Day to symbolize whether your mother was still living or not.

- White Carnation meant she had passed
