When treating respiratory conditions such as COPD, Chronic Respiratory Failure, Neuromuscular conditions, or Restrictive lung conditions, NIV offers several advantages over the traditional BiPAP machine. NIV includes:
- decreases the work of breathing while improving muscle weakness
- decreases daytime sleepiness and morning headaches
- decreases hospital readmissions that may require intubation
- improves memory/concentration issues
- improves depression and anxiety
- maintains and improves the Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide levels in the blood
- improves quality of sleep
- allows use of the AVAPS mode, which prevents dyssynchrony, leading to improved patient outcomes
Non-Invasive Ventilators (NIVs), sometimes referred to by the brand name
"Trilogy," are positive-pressure ventilation machines. Positive pressure ventilation helps to increase the patient's normal tidal volume but allows the patient to control how long they breathe in and the ending of inspiration. By increasing this normal tidal volume, optimal ventilatory support can be achieved. Trilogy ventilators and other NIVs can often be used at home or in a skilled nursing facility setting.
Our Respiratory Therapists are trained to:
- identify patients who would benefit from using an NIV
- apply and monitor an NIV
- communicate with nurses and other caregivers to ensure the NIV is monitored appropriately whenever needed
- explain to residents what the NIV is, how to use it, and why it may be a beneficial tool to help them breathe better
